First established in 1974, parkland is surrounded by communities Lake Bonavista (N), Deer Ridge and Deer Run (E). Bound by Canyon Meados Drive SE to the North and Bow Bottom Trail SE to the East.

Parkland is run by the Parkland Community Association, which offers and maintains various amenities and activities to residents such as the Parkland Community Hall, community soccer and crochet programs, and more.

Parkland is bordered on the South and West edges by Calgary's Fish Creek Provincial Park, the second-largest urban park in Canada, which features over 100km (62 mi) of hiking trails, river pathways (following the Bow River), picnicking areas, playgrounds, and swimming and fishing destinations. Fish Creek Provincial Park is also home to Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre and Calgary’s Sikome Lake Aquatic Facility, a free use family beach and man-made lake.

Within Parkland is Park 96 "Our Big Backyard," named in 1975, this 22-acre park is host of various events and activites including live performances Summer Sundays, Autumnfest, a resident disc golf league, kids summer camps, and more.

Dining, shopping, and services can be found just across Bow Bottom Trail at the Deer Ridge Shopping Centre.
